nerak

nerak at your service

Nerak is where service is king and an outlier—a sore thumb—in an otherwise frozen wasteland. It would make sense to question why anyone would go all the way out into this frozen land to check into a hotel, however the buildings of—and full of—ice are full of warmth of a different sort. There is no question of who stands at the top of the hierarchy here—it's the guests. The guest are everything to the staff here, and they live to serve. Whatever you need, they will deliver. The structures of ice are only there as a means of weathering the harsh cold from the outside, a natural and plentiful resource that can be used to constantly update and improve the hotel. They must, after all, continue to meet the needs of the guests who check-in.

The staff are most generous and will kowtow to numerous amounts of requests and answer to whatever question that they're able to give, however, there is just one thing that they ask of all of the guests. Just a single thing. No one is allowed to speak of conflict. None. The staff do not step in for small personal squabbles or arguments that may occur, but any serious discussions about any other kinds of conflict are not allowed. After all, why would you want to worry your head about things like that? Come; look, there is plenty here, rest those weary bones and tired souls. ( 1, 2 )

technology level: modern, just reinforced for surviving in a tundra and matching the ice hotel aesthetics
population: fully staffed hotel with other guests; all are human, ranging in age but there are very small numbers for anyone under 18
clothing styles: modern, but mostly intended for keeping you warm in the cold

    1. LOBBY - Checking in is the first thing that many people do when arriving into a hotel (if you're familiar with what those are), and it's no different here. A lot can be gathered, as well, from what kind of place you've ended up in from the lobby and this it's no different here—though everything inside is made from ice with furs covering where one might rest their hand or sit down, it's still all elegant and classy. Luxurious in its frozen beauty. A perfect meeting space before going somewhere else, with a raised and small lounge for when you're waiting for the rest of your party (right in front of the gift shop). The staff are here as well. Is there something that you need? Something that you're missing? Don't worry, the staff here are open to answering your questions... Just don't push them too hard. ( 1, 2, 3 )

    2. GIFT SHOP - Running low on supplies? Forget your toothbrush or out of toothpaste? No worries—you can find it all at the gift shop. Just walk down further into the hotel and to your left there it'll be. Ranging from common supplies, to snacks, to even little trinkets—you can bet that it can be found here. Shocking complimentary and all of it branded, of course. Though, even if it is all complimentary for guests do not try to be too greedy. What is anyone going to do with ten toothbrushes? Let alone twelve bags of snacks. Come now.

gift shop inventory: t-shirts, long johns, jackets, shawls, sweaters, miscellaneous stuffed animals (arctic and antarctic both), toiletries, snacks, drinks, various other things you would find in a gift shop

    3. SAUNA - What's a luxury hotel without a spa let alone a sauna? Just because everything is made from ice doesn't mean it should be limited in what kind of services that can be made available to for those who rest their weary souls under the roof. There is a sauna, separated by genders, for all guests to enjoy. It's all very standard with a locker room (made of ice) with a rest area out in the front while the sauna itself is deeper inside beyond the doors. ( 1 )

The sauna itself isn't cased in ice and instead is a clean, wooden room with a window that looks out into the frozen tundra. (The reference picture lies.) It's not much of a sight as it is a reminder of where you are. You are in the middle of a frozen wasteland while being cocooned in luxurious furs and beauty that will only last as long as the ice remains frozen. No need to pay any mind to that right? You're here to relax. ( 1 )

    4. DINING AREA - Aside from the accommodations, obviously, there should be a place to eat within the grounds of the hotel and there is most definitely is. The staff have not held back with the décor or the lavishness of what their guests can find themselves surrounded with. While the theme of a “winter wonderland” might seem a little unnecessary, the staff will insist that it's to remind their guests of the beauty of nature. The blanched branches and lights are all supposed to distract from the actual lands outside. Now, what will you be having? ( 1, 2, 3 )

Of course, there is a kitchen in the back of the dining area that guests are welcome to ask the chef and cooks if they can use, but why would you want to make use of it? The staff here, cooks included, will cater to any and all of the guests' needs. Just ask and you shall receive.

menu: can be found here, but there's miscellaneous nonperishables in the pantry as well as fresh food

    5. STAIRCASE - While guests are free to roam wherever they wish to go, there is one place that is blocked off for all guests despite it's impressive construction. To the side upon entering the lobby will be a spiraling, grand staircase that will be blocked off by a thick rope and a sign stating that it's for “STAFF ONLY”. Now, no one is guarding it, but if the staff catch you trying to sneak under the ropes then that definitely will not earn yourself any good graces. Let a mod know if you plan to keep on trying to climb the stairs. ( 1 )

    6. CHAPEL - Tucked away from most of the rest of the hotel, leaving behind the wood and stone building whose first floor is a veritable freezer inside, is a space where guests can find a place that's likely to not be heavily populated by many. Compared to how everywhere else has been decorated and how the ice has been carved, the walls here are all much more simple. There is nothing here to indicate whatever religion (or faction) of where it's supposed to stand for. Angels, expectantly, are etched into the walls but so are other symbols of other types of faith. Nothing over the top and, quite honestly, it's more a blank slate. If you're here to talk to someone then perhaps there might be someone around to really listen to you. ( 1, 2, 3 )

    7. LODGING - The concept of a hotel made completely of ice may not inspire people to think that the rooms will be too comfortable, however, that might be surprisingly for those who are in that mindset. While everything is still made of ice, and the light source for everything is not something that would produce any reasonable amount of heat, the rooms do not spare any access or source of the softest and warmest of furs for the guests. The beds—while the frames are carved from ice, the mattress is the perfect balance between soft and firm. This is doubly true for the pillows. Only the most restless will be unable to sleep. Though, you can certainly cuddle for warmth! ( 1, 2, 3 )

As far as the bathroom is concerned, it, too, is carved out of ice—however the floor has been laid with white marble. Now, while it does nothing to warm the room itself, you won't have to worry about sticking to anything. In the case of the shower and the bath, they are constructed out of glass to prevent the ice from melting as well as the guests from sticking to the surface. Aside from all of the ice, the water is still warm—steaming hot showers will be allowed—for guests to really enjoy themselves in the privacy of their rooms. Especially since, as you've previously experienced, your coin will only give you access to the room you're assigned to. ( 1, 2 )

    8. ICE BAR - Now everything can't be peace, quiet, and rich foods all of the time. Some people crave something more upbeat and to get their blood pumping—something to make themselves feel alive. And, well, the staff here are more than happy to accommodate and thus have created a full bar (name a liquor, beer, or wine and it will be available) with music for all guests to enjoy—mind that they're old enough to drink. Not that they're too familiar what the acceptable age of drinking should be, but they'll trust that those who enter the bar will be responsible and not let themselves go too far. They'd hate it immensely if they had to escort any of the guests out of the bar due to their unruly behavior. ( 1, 2 )

    9. STORAGE - As nice as everything is on the inside, the staff are fully aware that they can't keep those who want to venture into the outdoors from doing so. They only urge that the guests make use of the snowmobiles or sleds that are located in the storage building—one of the few places not made entirely out of ice—just outside of the hotel. For the sleds, an animal can be provided for the guests who are interested in such as they do not nor would not want another guest to pull the sled for another. Safety first after all! A sentiment that is strongly followed through with how the storage building will be fully stocked with all of the necessary riding equipment to keep any guest who decides to be adventurous warm and safe with thick snow coats, helmets, and goggles. ( 1, 2 )

    10. ICE GARDEN - For those who are not interested in those things but still want to venture outside, there is an ice sculpture garden of various animals, shapes, objects, and scenes. Some of the animals will be familiar to some while others may be foreign to the rest—all guests are welcomed here. Something made especially clear with some of the (even) more elaborate sculptures of angels. Mind the kind of conversation you have around these pieces, but let them lead the way into the ice maze. Everything is illuminated by lights hidden in the ice, multicolored and built into slides, stairs, pathways. Try not to get too lost in there, but at least someone from the hotel should come and get you if you get turned around. ... right? ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 )

    11. HOT TUB - Tired of the sauna? The hot waters of the bath or showers not cutting it? Well, the staff have prepared something for that too with the hot tubs that are located a little ways from the hotel. All of that hot water would be dangerous so close to the ice building after all. But, if you want to really relax and melt away your worries then there are large tubs, if you could confidently call them that, filled with waters that are always that perfect temperature of feeling that it may be near scalding. The comforts of the hotel located nearby in little buildings to make the trip back comfortable. Of course, the staff themselves are there to help you out of the tubs if the temperature differences are too much.

Now, what about those glass bottles that can be found littered around the tubs? The staff have no idea what they're for but welcome the guests to take them if they want. Again, they seem to perfectly fit a small message or an item. It might be weird to throw it into the hot tub, but maybe something interesting might happen if you do. ( 1, 2, 3 )

In the distance and as far as the eyes can see stretches ice, snow, and more ice. There are places where the land seems to crack open to expose something below except that it's just more ice and snow for as far as the light can reach. It's not safe to be out for too long even with all of the gear that's been given to you by the staff. The winds can pick up unexpectedly and blizzards can form on the fly. Let the mods know if you stay outside longer than a couple of hours.
