A MEASURE OF TRUTH

On Monday, at 7 PM EST / 4 PM PST / 5 PM MST and later in the week on Friday at the same times, Disce catches Nero's attention. Both will innately know that they have somewhere to be, and Disce will be able to lead the way—even if they've never been there before. Her form changes, as they're both accustomed to, but takes that of a pine marten, and upon reaching their destination, they will be greated by the Watchers.

After finishing their business, Nero and Disce will not be able to return to this location again without being invited back, regardless of whether they attempt to return on the same day or in the same week. Disce will be able to take her pine marten form again on her own, but will revert to one of her original forms upon leaving. Nero and Disce both will know that this form cannot be shared openly, and that caution should be practiced with sharing it privately, as well.


As the reader, Nero will be given the opportunity to ask two questions each week, using the alethiometer to find an answer. They will have two meetings with the Watchers a week, on Monday and Friday, after awakening. They may ask both questions on Monday or save them until Friday, or they may split their questions between these meetings. Any further questions they ask of the alethiometer will remain unanswered.

The questions asked will be Nero's own choice, and any answers will be given in a series of symbols from the alethiometer. Nero will be granted only one initial meaning for each of the symbols on the alethiometer, and any others will have to be discovered on their own. Keep in mind that this leaves room for some answers to be interpreted incorrectly, leading to a false reading; while the alethiometer can be used to find the truth, it will by no means give an easy answer.

Additionally, Nero may use this time to speak directly with the Watchers each week. He may ask questions, receive small hints, or simply chat with them, though any information received will be subject to the Watchers' own discretion.

★ Use your daemon’s pine marten form sparingly.
★ Never let anyone else use the alethiometer.
★ If too many participants learn about the alethiometer, it will be requisitioned.
★ The alethiometer may answer up to two questions per week.
★ There are other meanings to each symbol beyond the basic meanings. You must learn to interpret them on your own.

That role is from the other side, so we didn't have any sure way of knowing about it. But we did sense it when you found each other.

Even if we knew that for sure, we couldn't tell you.

I don't think it works that way.

That's... probably not a good idea. At least, not for now.

[Tiredly sits on the ground. (He hasn't even asked a compass question yet.)]

What are we at... four weeks of this now? Are you guys holin' up okay?

Four weeks.

[ they shrug. ]

I guess so. The mask is still annoying to have to wear all the time, and people we care about are still dying, so it could be better. Could be worst and all of us could be dead.

[ don't... just talk about it so casually. ]

Do... you have to wear it in here?

[buddy, take it off if it bothers you so much?]

I kinda... wanna ask if there is a way to end this without more deaths, or maybe how do we end it without more deaths.

We're kind of not supposed to unless someone asks.

[ you know what, sure. they like nero. they reach up to lower the hood and remove the mask. the golden sheen of Dust fades away from their face. ]

[ and they'll remove the top cloak as well, actually. ] It's a lot easier to to talk without it.

Looks like it. A little cooler without all of that on?

A lot cooler. This is still a desert, even if I've got portable AC. [ still, he smiles. ] You, too.

Did ya have your own name before all of this too?

[ nodding in agreement. ] I was always more of a night owl, anyway.

Got up early for my restaurant's sake, but I feel ya.

[grigori]

That makes sense. The music scene's more active at night, though, so I've got no reason to be up early, except for class.

Class?

Music clubs back home are open pretty much all the time. [ in West, anyway. ] What kinda music do ya play?

[grigori]

Yeah, for school. Do they not have that where you're from? Well, yeah, they're open pretty often where I'm from, too, but the shows are usually at night. And I'm in a rock band, though... I don't know if you'd have that, either?

[perfectdistance]

Depends on where you're livin'.

[Nero did not directly answer this question.

Shakes his head.]

Most of it's... Uh. Violins, harpsichords, that kinda stuff. ["the dark ages" as he's said before.]

Oh, the classical stuff. So you probably don't have guitars or rock music. [ lame. ]
