I started this game thinking to myself that Bertolt wasn't going to get a ship and then bertkira came at me like the Kool-Aid Man sign that Bertolt sent to the living during a town hall. So, at a base level, it works out because Bertolt is 100% a morosexual and Akira is a moron about things. That's it tl;cr over...

Anyway, Bertolt just kind of found being around Akira to be comfortable. With their first thread, as short as it was, it kind of a good base for their friendship to start. Following that, when they sparred after the Week 0 trial, it put an even better feel to their friendship. Just some mutual talking about justice in their world, a desire to fight Qi Rong, and then making plans for a weekly post trial spar. Following that, just talking about their situation and they just kept agreeing about certain things. It kept trending positively and I was looking forward to see how this friendship would keep developing

Then the trial happened and oh man was that great. So, Bertolt's plan once he was figured out was to play a pathetic child and try to get sympathy from everyone else to see if that could convince people to vote for someone else and maybe split the vote enough that he could be saved. Part of that plan, caused him to apologize to Akira once he was caught, which led to /GESTURES. Akira punching him is something that threw him for a loop, but wasn't surprised by and then people jumped in to stop Akira, and Bertolt, who by that time was feeling the effects of an emotion calming curse being put on Idi, stepped in to get people off Akira. This is (was?) his friend and Bertolt didn't want people to fight him when the only reason this was happening was because of him.

AND THEN THEIR POST TRIAL PC

After Akira punches him and they start talking, they seem to thing along similar lines, with Akira understanding why Bertolt killed and Bertolt talking about how if had more time to think and plan, he might have gone for someone else instead of Nine. And then Bertolt started talking and told Akira about his past and what he's done. It had been so long since he's talked about any of that with anybody and talking with someone who might understand.

And Akira did.

It was such a relief, considering his canon point is following him and Reiner being exposed and leaving with Ymir. He understands why his friends from canon would turn on him, they don't know everything that he knows. All they know is that he is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people by being the Colossal Titan and that he was trying to kidnap Eren for reasons. Akira confirming that he would still be Bertolt's friend. Then they kept talking and--

Well, he ended up getting a crush on Akira by the end of the thread.

A big reason why Bertolt gave him his pocketknife. He stole it from the first city as a way to bring comfort to himself. If he dies and goes away forever, he wanted Akira to have something of his, a memento.

So now starts their Victorian letter writing romance.

It was a good way for them to keep in contact, though not as best as they would like. Bertolt is definitely better at writing than Akira and after Week 2, he did write him every week. But the biggest catalyst was definitely the masquerade. Where they got drunk together. And Akira unbuttoned his shirt, showing off his ripped bod.

Akira please, you killed Bertolt, a little baby bi with a crush.

So, feeling emboldened by the alcohol, he decides to hold Akira's hand, trying to get across the feeling of "HEY I LIKE YOU". And Akira talks about dying. And Bertolt just wanted to do everything he could to help him deal with it. It's definitely what propelled his crush into full-fledged like. He did what he could and Akira seemed to feel better from it-- and then he fell asleep on him and so Bertolt just kissed him on the forehead. Just… giving further confirmation of his feelings.

AND YEAH GAY ACTIVITY STARTED OK

Like I mentioned before, it was like a perfect storm of circumstances that led to Bertolt to get a crush. Here was someone who Bertolt felt comfortable being around and talking to, who wouldn't take his shit and could relate to being on the "wrong" side of things. Akira didn't push him away after he revealed almost everything he could about his world, both times he did so. For the first time, Bertolt saw options available to him that he didn't have at home. He could have either stayed a Warrior or become a Soldier at home, but now there's more he could do. He doesn't have to stick with things there. In the end, the conflict at home doesn't matter to him. He only wanted to get medicine for his dad. If it wasn't for that, I don't think he would have joined the Warrior unit at home. What matters to him now are his friends Reiner and Annie and he's going to get them away from everything.

But perhaps most importantly here, he had feelings for Akira and acted on them rather than just watching them from the sidelines (LOOKS AT REINER) or not doing anything about it (LOOKS AT ANNIE). It's a good relationship for him! One free from all the baggage of being from AoT world and also one where there is that mutual understanding of "Hey we just went through a murdergame together." Akira has definitely reached that point where Bertolt would kill for him without question.
