That they burn hotter than normal flames? [ a beat. ] At least, that what it means where I'm from. We... actually don't know that much more about you guys than what's on your profiles.
Yeah! I'm still getting the hang of it, but I can avoid people all together.
[He's still learning how to only burn some clothes and not all of them. But he's not going to test that on Suriel, that would be rude.
Once she makes the bubble, Rin holds up his hand and wills a blue fireball to appear in it. Ten minutes, alright. They can train for ten minutes.
Time to shoot a jet of fire directly at Suriel. He expects the shield to hold, but he's still mentally telling himself 'burn the shield and nothing else' just in case.]
[ something about the blue fire shocks her into silence. sure, she'd known about them, but to see them in person - and so close, so soon after the world turned upside down courtesy of one man with flames just as blue.
but this is rin. he won't hurt her. he's helping, they're helping each other, so she forces the smile back on her face and holds the shield steady. ]
Is that all you've got, Okumura-kun?
[ they won't get anywhere if they don't keep pushing themselves. ]
[This is Rin, and he won't hurt her. He will challenge her though, and he grins as he turns up the strength of the flames. She'll feel the extra force applied to the shield, but she won't feel the blazing heat from it. Instead, if she feels anything at all through the barrier, it just feels pleasantly warm. Warm like the warmth of using a hot water bottle or of holding your hands out towards a campfire.
After a few seconds of that, he pulls the fire back and darts around the bubble, trying to get a sneak attack from behind. Can she still block him if she doesn't see him?]
[ like a campfire... though rin can't see it while she wears the mask, her eyes widen in curiosity, fingers flexing under the warmth. whatever she was expecting, this wasn't it! but... it's nice, actually.
and enough of a distraction that darting behind catches her off guard! while the shield does cover her completely, it's weaker when her focus is on one point. her body moves before her mind can catch up, just the way she'd been trained, and yet -
the hit knocks both the shield suriel back, shattering as she stumbles to the ground with a yelp. ]
[He's not too worried about her being hurt, but he does cut off the flames and just keep a small ball of it in his hand so she's not distracted by them while she's on the ground.]
Yep! The more you practice it, the easier it gets. Kinda like riding a bike.
[He looks to the blue flames he has in his hand.]
My teacher taught me to control the fire by having me light candles. Too much power and the candles melt entirely. I had to only light them, not mess them up in any way, in order to pass.
It took me so, so many candles to get that one right.
[ she smiles as if she'd been there through it all - seeing rin's failures, celebrating his success. she's no less happy for him than she would be for any of her classmates, her friends. ]
And being able to control it so you don't burn anyone... That's more than anyone in my world can say.
[ she forms another, smaller shield around her hand reaches toward the fire in rin's. ]
[He holds his hands out, the fire flickering in them. It has that same 'warm' feeling as before, and if Suriel touches it she will find that the flames will jump to her hands but they won't actually burn anything. It's like watching lighting effects.
Meanwhile Rin is having a small mental crisis because he definitely thinks Suriel is reaching out to hold his hands and that's making him have...well, not GAY feelings, but you get the idea.]
[ you're just full of surprises, aren't you, rin? but she's utterly delighted, if the grin under the mask is anything to go by, and gives a little laugh. ]
[ if she plays with it, will it roll over her fingers? she's going to try it. ]
No kidding! One of the first things they tell us about our quirks is to be mindful of how they can affect other people, because a lot of heroes have powers that could kill someone instead of save them, if they aren't careful, same as you.
[It do! It dances around kind of like how the fire on a burning marshmallow does, except Suriel won't get burned by this fire.]
Yeah? And a quirk is what they call your powers?
[It's an interesting name for it.]
But- yeah, I have to be careful with my fire. It's easy to control right now, but when I get worked up it burns out of control. It's actually probably good that my fire is blocked off here for the most part, so we don't have to worry about it.
[Notoriously short temper + fire burn when angy = Rin accidentally burns stuff a lot. It's why he had the candle-training.]
But hearing that she's not afraid, it fills him with...relief? Happiness? Something in there. 'I trust you not to burn me.' Trust is something Rin has been given a few times in the past, but trust for his fire is...something else. His gaze softens, and he's speaking a bit quieter when he says the next words.]
I'm glad. Blue flames are...well, in my world, pretty much everyone who knows what the blue flames mean are afraid of them. And even with my friends who aren't normally afraid of me, they still don't like my flames. So...thanks. For trusting me.
she doesn't shy away from the flames. what rin says actually seems to motivate her to play them a little more, moving them between her hands. ]
...There's a villain back home that has blue flames. That's the only time I've ever seen it before, and he's... he's the reason things have gotten so out of hand. But it's not inherently a bad thing, to have something like this. At least, I don't think so. It's how you use it that makes the difference, and you'd use it to try to help people, right?
So you don't have to thank me. [ smiles. ] But you're welcome anyway.
It's how you use it that makes the difference, huh...?
[She's not wrong, and Rin knows it. All Rin wants to do is to become an exorcist, kick Satan's ass, and protect others. That's a good way to use his power, isn't it?]
...
There's only one man that I call Dad: Shiro Fujimoto, the priest who adopted me and Yukio when we were babies. But the man who fathered me, he has blue flames too. And he uses them to harm the world.
I wanna become stronger than him, so that I can kick his ass and stop him for good. But until that day, his reputation follows me everywhere I go. Many people just see me as "Satan's son" and think I'm gonna follow in his footsteps. They never even stop to ask me what I'm gonna do with my life. They think that just because the man who helped create me is a bad guy that I'll be one too.
[He smiles.]
So I do wanna thank you, for seeing me as I am. I'm gonna defeat Satan regardless, but having someone in my corner makes it all seem easier.
Eh... But that's not fair to you at all. You're your own person before anything else.
[ it bothers her a lot, to hear something like this. especially after learning about dabi, and seeing how that video of his turned their whole world upside down.
still. suriel shakes that thought off to focus on what - and who - is before her instead. ]
Then I'll keep rooting for you, Okumura-kun! You'll definitely win, and you have to let me know when you do!

...but don't worry! I can control what I burn and what I don't burn, so I'm just gonna try to burn the bubble. Not you.
no subject
Okay... You need the practice, too, so let's try to do a big one.
[ she holds out her hands, focuses and... voila! a shimmery, silver shield appears between them! she smiles. ]
Ready when you are!

Suriel!

Too much?

[ she pushes herself back to her feet, brushing dirt off her cloak. it turns into golden dust and vanishes before it hits the ground. ]
That's the whole point of training. And besides, I've had far worse falls than that.
no subject
[The gold dust is cool though. He sees it and makes a mental note to ask about it later.]
So your shield's based on how much you can concentrate, yeah? It broke when you fell down.
no subject
[ her voice is soft, just for a moment, before she bounces right back. ]
Looks that way, huh? I haven't had to use it much yet, so maybe that's why. But that's the same for any power, isn't it?

Yep! The more you practice it, the easier it gets. Kinda like riding a bike.

Yep. It's because everyone's abilities are different somehow. It's rare that two people have the exact same one, so - it's a quirk.
[ that does get her to glance back up at rin, though. ]
That sounds normal...? Of course your fire would be tied to your emotions - it's still part of you.

I guess it makes sense, yeah. But...it doesn't scare you? The fire, I mean.
