Well, to get to the stars in a most real sense, but achieving one's goals as thus...I suppose it could cover both.

But why? Just to simply see what the stars are like?

Have you not thought of it Mr. Sholmes? To be up in the skies with the stars—to be far away from others in a place so very few go.

No person can live entirely alone. There are many accounts of people going mad from being isolated and alone for too long.

Well, in my case, I go mad if I'm alone for more than fifteen minutes. It's just how it goes.

Yes, yes... I can understand the restless part. Even if I'm doing my work all alone, I am never truly alone.

Has your Irene been of any help to you with your loneliness?

She has been. It is most unusual, given that we can't exactly speak like you and I are doing now...but it is as if I have a constant companion who understands, deeply, what I'm going through. Even more so than friends and family, somehow. Don't you, Irene.

[She lets out a pleasant squawk in return, nuzzling against his cheek.]

Well, she is your soul Mr. Sholmes. The representation of yourself. It would be strange if there was a disconnect between you and her. It's not entirely impossible for that to be the case but that sort of thing isn't common.

Daemons do have their own personalities as I'm sure you know and have seen.

The more accurate description would be that they're aspects of yourself. Crows are known for their intelligence and adaptability. Do you have a problem thinking of yourself as any of those animals?

[And he thinks of that for a moment. Irene reaches forward with her beak to tug at his hair a little, playfully.]

Pink snakes don't exist in the wild or even a color morph. Maybe I'm just a strange one through and through.

Goodness, for an animal that is supposedly your soul, Tammy is quite aggressive towards you.

Ah! Well. That would be my... [He starts, stops. It's still something that he's getting used to, saying it like it is. He's been coy about it with others, but it feels wrong, somehow, to be vague about it here.] That would be my daughter.

[ the confession of the daughter catches them off guard. oh. ]

Your daughter? I would not have pegged you as a married man. [ quickly and earnestly. ] I'd like to know more about a great detective's daughter.

Oh, I'm not married. [All the single detectives...all the single detectives.........] And, well, she's brilliant in her own right. That's an understatement, you know. She even has a doctor's degree.

Your daughter has a doctorate's?

Is she your adopted daughter? Not that adopted children can't be your real children. I've heard it can be quite the opposite.

Yes, and yes. She may not be related to me by birth, but...it doesn't matter, in my opinion.

[It's really funny, because if he was earlier in his timeline, he probably wouldn't just call her his "daughter" outright, and wouldn't even acknowledge that he was her father.]

[But now...he sort of glances away, a surprisingly almost bashful sort of gesture.]

I hope she continues to think so.

Well Mr. Sholmes, you haven't given me any reason why I think she wouldn't.

You seem to be a respectable man of reason and good character. I don't see any reason why she wouldn't.
