It has, of course. But then that leads to the options of "they are doing this because they're getting something rather good out of it" or "they literally cannot rebel, as that would result in quite grave punishment".

And I have yet to ascertain which it may be, if not both.

Could be a little of both, or neither. Maybe it didn't even matter who they chose, because someone would have ended up in this position no matter what. People with power are like that sometimes.

It's the principle of the matter. What, just because a threat is in the shadows, I should not care for what it does? Most of the ones I bring to justice are not known from the start. That is why, precisely, I must endeavor to unmask them - and let them eat their just desserts.

No one said you don't have to care. But it's not wrong for people to just want to keep living their lives while they can instead of letting whatever threat there is get to them. And not everyone who are supposed to "bring justice" actually care.
