adwontes

adwontes the land of straw and expies

Adwontes is not the first destination that many would make. It's not that the village is unpleasant or that the people aren't friendly—no, quite the contrary, the people of the small village are very friendly. It is not the most lavish village full of all kinds of creature comforts but there is plenty to make people feel comfortable with what they have. The villagers open their arms and homes for those who pass by. It is part of their faith to make sure that everyone is welcomed and cared for. Visitors are blessings as well as an opportunity to spread the knowledge that have held onto for centuries. Knowledge that is key to the understanding of many things. All good things, the villagers would say. To not share the bounty that they've been given would be wrong.

Blasphemous, even.

On the walls are images of angels and there are paintings of angels descending onto people below with a heavenly light. Grand statues of angels as the saviors. A pair of hands that reach towards the sky in prayer. The villagers of Adwontes hold dearly to their faith and treat it as truth—the idea of thinking otherwise is impossible, and for those who would try to change the villagers of their beliefs then... Well. It's very unbecoming to question the livelihood of those who are opening their homes to you, isn't it?

    1. TEMPLE - If there is any building that stands out beyond all of the others, it's the temple. With it's multiple floors and grand stone arches and statues in front, it stands as the centerpiece of the village with all building fanning out from it in a circular shape. All villagers make their way into the temple at least once a day to offer a prayer of thanks to the angels who have blessed them with the bounties they have and a prayer to hope that they will continue to look over everyone in the village. In fact, there are many villagers who call the temple their home and occupy some of the rooms on the lower floor.

The second and third floor are increasingly extravagant with the décor on the third floor almost seemingly impossible for what a modest village in the woods would be able to construct with the walls of brilliant marbling and masonry. Above all else there is one particular door that's gilded in gold and adored with the most intricately placed gems—clearly something important lies beyond those doors, however they are locked. Any and all attempts to break through will bring out the worse of the villagers. Let the mods know if you are going to try to break into the room.

Sandwiched in the middle, the second floor is shown to be a step above from the humble majesty and a step down from dazzling decorum. Here is also where those who come pray make themselves known within the grand open area of the audience room. A mural stretching across an entire wall depicts what looks to be a group of people being saved from some great evil by heavenly beings. The mosaic is old but well cared for. And while the room is mostly open and empty with only a few pews, there are grand statues of various angels that tower above any who enter the room. Visitors are welcomed to touch the statues, but do not entertain the idea of defacing them even for a moment.

    2. WALL OF WORDS - A little ways from the temple is a solitary wall that seems to offer no immediate sign as to what it may be for. It lacks the angels or any sort of imagery related to any kind of heavenly being, however if someone spends enough time looking at the wall, they'll be able to make out some names. Most of the names that can be read are faded or have been overwritten by another name. A pairing of names on some instances. Curiously, if someone stares at the wall long enough, the name of the viewer will slowly appear onto the stone. Not only that, but another name (or names) will slowly start to appear around it with either a heart or a spade to connect the names to one another. If you ask any of the villagers about the meaning or importance of the names that appear, they'll kindly smile and say that it's fated. What exactly has been fated? Who knows. That's be beauty of it.

    3. TOWN - Further away from the temple and making up the fringes of the circular nature of the village's construction is the town itself. All sorts of buildings and shops that can be expected for a village can be found spread across the two sides of the plaza—taverns, small shops, various stands where vendors who are unable to afford a shop sell their goods. As with the temple, but to much less degree, is the presence of angels and other otherworldly décor. Trust and expect that every building is sure to have at least one statue of an angel with its wings spread and hands raised above its head and open as to grasp a hold of something. Despite the temple being the heart of the village, the town is plenty busy itself as they go on with their lives.

However, for those who are just passing by, they will direct towards one particular tavern and inn. Both buildings are situated near enough to one another and seemingly seem a bit isolated from the rest of the village. Unfortunately, there's no way to prove any of those theories nor should you go about doing so.

    4. TAVERN - A sizable building with a dining area with enough tables and seating to comfortably fit nearly any large group of people, is the tavern that the villagers will usher all visitors towards. Running the tavern is a modest but very welcoming staff that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day at the same time each day. The staff will be as accommodating as possible for specific request but are limited to what could be found in the forest and in the streams. With any hope, they'll create something close to what's being asked. For those who want to make use of the kitchen for themselves and prepare their own meal, they are also welcomed to but only between meal times. They'll take no offense as long as people ask first.

Of course, to live up to it's name of being a “tavern”, alcoholic beverages can be found here—mainly that of rum, whiskey, ale, and bourbon though. At least there's alcohol, right? Well, for those who seem to be of drinking age; anyone appearing to look like a child will not be served. Just as well, much like the rest of village, the motif of angels and the like can be found but to much smaller degree as the designs are more subtle.

    5. INN - Much like the tavern, it's a sizable building with multiple floors and plenty of rooms to accommodate as many guests as possible. The front desk is run by another kind villager who is more than happy to help, and the lobby is a respectable size with couches and a warm hearth for anyone to relax near. A single opulent angelic sculpture can be expectantly found next to where the village stands. There isn't much in terms of entertainment, and if questioned about what there is "to do around here," the villager running the front desk will kindly suggest the temple. Of course. If they pass you a key in the meantime, you don't recall, since your coins open your rooms yet again.

Each room is furnished with a full size bed, a small table with chair, end table with a lantern, and a bathroom. The bathroom has all the basics with a tub, sink, and toilet. All of things modest in their construction and simple in design. Perhaps a bit of a stark contrast to the extravagance of the lobby or any of the angelic sculptures found across the lands, but all of it is comfortable enough with the bed plenty soft and blankets plenty warm. For any who run a little cooler than others, extra blankets can be requested at the front desk as well as any toiletries that anyone may be looking for. Maybe you can bring something back for your roomie?

    6. FIRE PIT - In the center of the plaza and town is a large fire pit of sorts created from stone with the charred remains of what look to be a thick pile of straw in the middle of it. Examining the ash and straw that remain inside of the fire pit will revel that it has been a while since there had been any kind of. (Also doing so will earn weird looks from the villagers.) If someone were to go asking about what the fire pit was used for, the villagers will only smile at them. “You'll see.”

    7. WELL - Also somewhat in the middle of the town's plaza is a moderately sized well. It looks to be about the kind of well that anyone could expect to find in a forested village. Located near the well are small glass bottles that may be familiar to you now. However, it seems like a few of them have been compromised and have cracks in them. Maybe not use those? Or maybe do so. I don't know your life. Note, that picking up any of the glass bottles by the well will earn a lingering gaze from the villagers.

    8. "PRAYER HANDS" - Away from the village on the vast flatland before the forest starts, juts out from the ground are two massive hands reaching towards the sky. Hands open waiting to receive a bounty from the sky or pleading hands asking for forgiveness. Which one is the truth and which one is the lie? No one will say. From a distance, it's hard to tell what they're made out of but upon closer inspection they appear to be made out of wood, straw, and chunks of stone. The foundation is of roughly cut out stone with wood and straw making up the fingers and hands. Unlike the rest of the village and all of the other religious artifacts within the village walls, the hands are not well cared for. Moss and vines have overtaken the hands and there is signs of how the wood has begun to rot in some areas. What is the purpose of these hands? What do they represent?

    9. STREAM - To those who keep on walking beyond the hands and he towards the forest, eventually they'll find themselves at a stream where fish can be seen darting back and forth just underneath and crayfish can be seen briefly under rocks before they bury themselves into the mud. It might be a little tricky to catch them by hand, but there are other ways to catch a fish. More reasonable ways. Following the stream will just lead deeper into the forest where the more adventurous lot can do a bit of hunting if they wish. Deer, elk, and other forest dwelling creatures will be found.

For the most those who are observant, however, along the stream glass bottles can be found. Unlike the ones in the village found by the well, these are unharmed and seem to be in perfect condition. Maybe you should pick these up and fill them with a note and toss them back? Something interesting might happen if you do.

Every night at the same time lights will appear around the "Prayer Hands" one by one in a spiraling fashion until it reaches the tips of the fingertips. The lights will glow in relative silence, however for those who are of good hearing or those who want to wander closer, they will be able to hear low sounds of chanting from within the hands. Where are the voices coming from? What is being said? There are no answers to either. It's best to just go back to sleep.
