otamo melodies of m̸̜̭̝̥̉̈́̃ë̴̱̪̣́͑̀m̴̫̀̌ǫ̴̝͔̞̉̈͠r̵̭͚̳͑́͋ḭ̶̲̋̇̒̔e̶̬̓̄̅š̷̮̪̙̈́͠ forgotten canals

Green—it's the first thing that will likely come to mind when looking around. The second would likely be how much water there is. A cursory glance would make it seem as though the city was partially submerged—and maybe it was at one point—but on closer inspection, it's more that there are a number of canals that cut through the city itself. Another something that might not be entirely obvious to anyone entering the city, is how there will be a tune ( if it could be called that ) that is heard regardless of wherever anyone stands or is.

Ignoring the canals stand buildings that seem to be products of children's drawing with architecture that lack lines and straight edges and contain curves and circles. Buildings that are asymmetrical—one side being much taller than the other—housing more floors than its other half. Buildings that look two be two entirely different ideas glued together. The buildings nevertheless are colorful, whimsical, and artfully constructed with windows made of stained glass. Well, once upon they were. Most of the buildings have their windows shattered with the broken fragments of the beautiful glass either lying scattered on the ground below or shimmering in the water.

They are free to pick up or collect as there's no one around to stop you. Putting some of them back together might reveal an image of something symbolic. However, just be careful of how long you look at some of them. You might see something that should have stayed buried as a secret. Something that you don't want anyone else to see.

technology level: solarpunk, low energy, renewable energy (water and solar), modern-esque; all in need of maintenance
clothing styles: art nouveau in fashion, so an approximate 1870-80 to early 1900 at the latest

    1. CANALS - Both dividing the city into parts as well as providing easier access to the deeper parts of the city with ease, are the canals of varying size. There are large, deep canals that would have been used as the main way of traversing through the city with the smaller canals being used optionally. Or, at least, that would have be the assumption as there are no distinct markers along the canals to let anyone know where they are in particular. Instead, it's just more common to find small docks along the larger and wider canals for people to disembark or embark on a small boat. Suppose you could swim in the canals too. I don't know your life. Mind the rubble if you do. ( 1, 2 )

of note: small docks and boats are available to travel the canals

    2. MARKETS - Spreading across sections of land connected by the canals exists a large open space decorated with a variety of damaged sculptures. It's difficult to discern what they could have been, but there are fragments that appear to be wing-shaped. Circling the open area are buildings with store fronts advertising a number of different goods for purchase. Most are long gone but some still have the products that they once had—different styles of clothing that have not been completely ruined, jewelry that stubbornly clings to its display, tucked away trinkets and other miscellaneous items. No one seems to be around to stop anyone with sticky fingers. Besides, wouldn't it be better in the hands of someone than just simply hanging there? They were created to be used. ( 1, 2, 3 )

additional shops in the market: salvageable clothing, restaurants and grocers with non-perishables, jewelers, butcher, baker, bookshop (fairytales, how-to books, adaptations of shakespearean-esque tales, music books)

    3. MANSION - While all of the buildings in the city are artfully constructed and are on grand scales of marvels, there is one building that's particularly noteworthy for its location as well as its condition. In the middle of the towering buildings is a large clearing with a solitary house. Well, if it could be considered simply as a “house”. More accurately, it should be considered a mansion on the scale of what some might even consider to be a castle with how sprawling it is. The most surprising thing about the mansion might be how the front door ( and all other doors leading inside ) are unlocked and the home is empty like the rest of the city.

FOYER – As castles have grand halls houses have foyers. Some are more modest than others while others are more spacious. In the case of this home, the foyer itself is tastefully decorated and teases what lies beyond its entrance despite its neglected state. Along the walls leading to the grand salon are portraits that should all seem so familiar to you. Now, how did these end up here?

GRAND SALON – Beyond the foyer is a large sitting area clearly meant for entertaining those who once called this home as well as relaxation. There are multiple couches, chairs, and sofas that are extremely comfortable to lounge on—if not fall asleep on unintentionally—despite showing some wear and tear. There are also an appropriate number of coffee tables and end desks to match the number of couches and sofas available. Against the walls are bookshelves and generic shelving containing both books ( care for a copy of some perry notter and the shiny rock? ) and mindless magazines of varying sorts. There is also two jukeboxes where people can use to play music. What kind of music? Well. It's something. Give it a smack or two?

KITCHEN – If there's anything to be impressive about a mansion and a sign of status, it's the scale of the kitchen and pantry space that's made available. The mansion's kitchen leaves no one for wanting anything. There are enough stoves, ovens, sinks for four people to be cooking at once without stepping on anyone's toes. All of the utensils and plates that anyone could ask for are also made available. Now, as for the matter of food availability? Anything “fresh” will have been long expired and in a state of decay, but items such as rice, sugar, salt, and other non-perishable foods/items can still be found safely sealed in the pantry.

UPSTAIRS – From the foyer and the grand salon, the railing of the upper floors can be seen and upon ascending the staircase one entire floor will be dedicated for bedrooms that seem identical in nature.

And fitting for the mansion, each bedroom will consist of a queen sized bed, sitting chairs with a desk, a private bathroom with the option of either a shower or a tub, two sinks, and a toilet. While the bathroom itself will be lacking necessary toiletries—those could probably be found somewhere else, right?—the question of whether there is running water or not is unnecessary. Small blessings, and even moreso that you have hot water. Unfortunately, there is a limit for how much hot water can be made available at any given time. On one side of the room there will be a small hearth to be used for warmth. ( Probably for those unlucky to get a full bath or shower with hot water. ) You'll just have to share, and make sure you have your coin with you.

GAME ROOM – Located on the top floor is where those who are not of the bookish nature can find enjoyment with pool tables, dart boards, a scr*bble game board that takes up most of one of the walls (the letters may look a little funny for some people, but I'm sure that's fine), and a portion of the floor colored in such a way that it would be suitable for a game of chess or checkers. Looks like there will be large sizes of both to use. The condition of these will be surprisingly well-kept.

EXERCISE ROOM – Next to the game room is a room sparsely but specifically decorated with mirrors from wall to wall alongside various gym equipment. There is a balance board, weights, punching bags, and a wall mounted barre for those who are adventurous. Mind, that not all of this equipment is in the best shape as it has been some time since these had seen another being let alone been in use. Accidents are prone to happen but surely you're aware of that.

??? ROOM – Off to the opposite end of the game and exercise room is another room that's been locked. Given the size of the doors that are leading to the room, it's likely that this is the master suite. However, once again, the room is locked and will be impervious to any kind of damage and will remain locked. Guess those whispers and shuffling will have to remain a secret.

additional minor locations: laundry (machines out of service due to neglect, but manual washing is available)

    4. GARDEN - Even if plants can be found spread across all of the buildings and have invaded all every nook and cranny of every surface possible, there exists a garden or perhaps more of a greenhouse with how a dome encloses the entire space. Or, that would have been the intent even if the reality was that the dome now has had a multitude of panels destroyed and the integrity of it fragile. Nevertheless, there is an existence of a variety plants that are not found across the city. From plants that would be be found in crop gardens, leaves that might be of medicinal use, to ones that are for pure décor. They've all seemed to have overgrown with some species of plants seeming to do “battle” with others as they compete for the best places to sprout their leaves. ( 1, 2 )

food available: overgrown herbs, mix of fruits and vegetables that are almost familiar but aren't quite what you expect

    5. FOUNTAINS - Scattered across the city are elaborate fountains with glass bottles that look big enough to stick a letter or some other small item inside. You might be compelled to throw them back into the fountain, however, the water has become a sickly green. Would such a nice bottle deserve to be thrown back into that kind of water? The question is, though, if you'd be willing to take the time to clean the fountain and replace the water. Given the access to and existence of the canals that seems a bit unnecessary, doesn't it? ( 1 )

    6. WATER MILL - Away from the sprawling city is a large water mill all on its own with a few wooden huts constructed nearby. It doesn't seem like there's anything to note in particular about the water mill as it carries the same architecture of the rest of the city—a marriage of nature and technology, but there is something to note. Rather—someone. Mulling about the huts and the water mill are natives that have called this their home. They are few in number and are unwilling to move back into the city itself. In fact, the very suggestion of moving back into the city will cause them to give the one speaking a bewildered look. Why would they ever do that? ( 1 )

In the distance or maybe not so far in the distance but somewhere are noises that can be heard by those who find themselves alone and in a particular quiet part of the city. Some noises are faint, a voice maybe, and never last for very long while others are sudden loud, muffled crashes that are followed up with nothing. Most interesting are how these noises only happen during the day. Instead of things going bump in the night, perhaps it's time to be wary of what lurks in the daylight?
